What event caused the separation of the National media.?

I would have to say the early 80's as a whole. That brought about the proliferation of news channels. Before that all we had was NBC, ABC, and CBS. Then came TBS, Turner, CNN, FOX, etc. With this, naturally, would come the various outlooks and political leanings. I believe it was a seperated biased media long before Clinton.
