Can I paint over Lead Based Paint? Is it still harmful even after the fact?

I'm currently in the process of buying a house. I am going to go home hunting and have my eye on a house that mentioned Lead Based Paint. Is this something that is tainted forever or is there a way to fix/remove the danger of Lead Based Paint??? Please Help!
